Welcome to Mizani Lagotto. We are a small, dedicated breeding programme focused on producing healthy, well-socialised Lagotto Romagnolo puppies with exceptional temperaments. Originally from Italy, the Lagotto is an intelligent, affectionate breed famous for truffle hunting and their charming curly, low-shedding coat.

Meet Louise Mizen-Ferguson
My passion for Lagotto Romagnolo began when my first Lagotto Lola, Gaesten Born To Frisk, joined our family in 2009. What started as admiration quickly became a lifelong dedication to preserving and improving the breed.
As a KC Assured Breeder, I am committed to the highest standards of health testing, socialisation, and ethical breeding practices. Every litter is carefully planned to enhance temperament, health, and breed type while ensuring our puppies go to loving, prepared homes.
I believe in complete transparency with puppy families and maintain lifelong relationships with the dogs I breed. My home is always open to prospective families who wish to meet our dogs and see how they are raised. I have owned Lagotto for over 16 years and now have five generations of Mizani behind my recent litters. All of my dogs are fully health tested. Mizani Lagotto have proved themselves as show dogs and working dogs in this country and abroad. I work my own dogs throughout the shooting season and compete in Field Trials and Working Tests. We have also competed in Truffle trials in Italy and we successfully forage for truffles in the UK.

An ancient Italian breed with a remarkable history and wonderful characteristics
Italian Heritage
The Lagotto Romagnolo is an ancient breed of waterfowl retriever originating from the vast marshlands of Romagna in north-eastern Italy. At the end of the nineteenth century much of these marshlands were drained and the flocks of waterfowl largely disappeared so the Romagnolo folk began to use their curly coated dogs with their phenomenal noses to search for the high prized and highly priced Tuber Magnatum, more commonly known as the White Truffle. Today the Lagotto is the only purebred dog in the world recognised as a specialised truffle hunter.
Wonderful Temperament
Lagotto are intelligent, affectionate, and eager to please, they form strong bonds with their families and with the correct socialisation are good with children and other pets.
Low-Shedding Coat
Their distinctive curly, wool-like double coat is low-shedding, making them a popular choice for allergy sufferers. Lagotto require clipping every 10-12 weeks to keep their coat healthy and mat-free.
Highly Trainable
Lagottos are highly intelligent and respond well to positive training methods. As well as fulfilling both functions for which they are recognised, gundog work and truffling, they excel in activities scent work, mantrailing, agility, and obedience.
Medium-Sized
Standing 41-48cm at the shoulder, Lagottos are a sturdy, medium-sized breed. They adapt well to various living situations, from country homes to city apartments.
Active Companions
While adaptable, Lagottos are active dogs who enjoy daily exercise and mental stimulation. They love water, walks, and especially activities that engage their keen nose.

At Mizani Lagotto, the health and wellbeing of our dogs is paramount. We believe responsible breeding starts with comprehensive health testing and complete transparency with puppy families.
- Eye Testing: Annual BVA/KC eye examinations for all breeding dogs
- Hip Scoring: BVA/KC Hip Dysplasia Scheme scoring with results well below breed average
- Elbow Grading: BVA/KC Elbow Dysplasia Scheme grading for all breeding stock
- DNA Testing: Comprehensive panel including Juvenile Epilepsy (JE), Lagotto Storage Disease (LSD), and other relevant tests
- Patella Testing A A manual examination carried out by a Vet specialising in Orthopaedics.
All test results are published on our website and certificates are available upon request. We encourage prospective families to ask questions and review our dogs' health records.
